GTA 6 Mapping Project Goes Into Overdrive With Trailer 2 Release: 'It's an Information Overload'

Author : Henry May 23,2025

The long-running GTA 6 mapping project has shifted into high gear following the release of Trailer 2, with one of its key contributors telling IGN that "it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year." The excitement is palpable within the GTA 6 Mapping Discord, where the project's 370 members, soon to surpass 400, are diving deep into the new details provided by the trailer.

"It's an information overload - it really changes everything for us for the rest of the year," said Garza, who manages the Discord server, to IGN. "We have so much new content to work on and we're really just getting started."

The GTA 6 Mapping Discord project kicked off after the significant September 2022 leaks, which some fans believe were playfully referenced by Rockstar at the start of Trailer 2. The project's mission is to create the most accurate GTA 6 map possible, a task that relied heavily on the leaks and December 2023's Trailer 1 until the release of Trailer 2.

The latest version of the GTA 6 map, released by project lead DuPz0r at the end of March, is now outdated due to the wealth of new information from Trailer 2. This has allowed for a much more precise and detailed map to be created.

In addition to confirming plot details, characters, and releasing 70 brand new GTA 6 screenshots, Rockstar provided information and images of the explorable areas in the state of Leonida, GTA 6's version of Florida. Confirmed locations from this week's reveal include Vice City, GTA 6's take on Miami, the tropical Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga, a national landmark near the state's northern border.

The volunteers are meticulously analyzing the trailer to pinpoint the exact locations of everything shown, matching fictional spaces to their real-world counterparts to refine GTA 6's map further. Once their work is complete, DuPz0r will release an updated map, which fans eagerly anticipate as a preview of what to expect when GTA 6 launches in May 2026.

Should Rockstar release more GTA 6 assets or gameplay footage before then, the volunteers will continue their efforts. Only upon GTA 6's release will they be able to compare their fan-made map to the actual game and assess the accuracy of their work.

However, the GTA 6 mapping project faces the looming threat of intervention by Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two. In March, a modder who created a playable version of the GTA 6 map within GTA 5 was forced to halt their project after receiving a takedown notice from Take-Two. This mod was based on the GTA 6 mapping project.

Last year, when asked by IGN about concerns regarding potential action from Take-Two, Garza expressed "some mild concern." He noted, "This project has been going on for quite some time with no direct disruption to our community. However, I always keep it into consideration if they intend on communicating with us in the future for any reason. We do not explicitly showcase leaked material in the map, so I do not believe they would take that down in particular. I believe they are aware that this project gathers popularity and interest in the game, since everyone wants to see how the world may look like. This can be one of the reasons why they haven’t done anything, since it’s not too negative. If I were ever in the situation of receiving a cease and desist though, then I would respectfully cease and desist. As we get closer to a precise map, it may be possible to receive that notice in the future."

As we await further developments, you can explore more about GTA 6, including all the details we've discovered so far and all the GTA 6 fan theories emerging from Trailer 2 itself.
