Square Enix Cancels Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link

Square Enix has officially announced the cancellation of Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link, their much-anticipated mobile game. While the news may have come as a shock to some, for others, it was not entirely unexpected given Square Enix's history of game cancellations. The development team had been working on Missing-Link since 2019, conducting multiple closed beta tests on both Android and iOS platforms. In November 2024, a delay was announced on X, which left many participants of the closed beta tests surprised, given the apparent depth of the project's development.

Why Was Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link Cancelled?

The team behind Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link stated that despite their efforts, they couldn't envision a sustainable path forward that would meet player expectations in the long term. The game was designed as a live-service experience, but the execution fell short of what was envisioned. Missing-Link aimed to be a unique, GPS-based spinoff where players could explore the world and fight Heartless with their keyblades, set in a forgotten chapter of the Kingdom Hearts universe. The concept intrigued many, especially the integration of GPS features, but it seems the practical implementation didn't meet the mark. Instead of releasing a subpar product, Square Enix decided to cancel the project and redirect their focus.

But Kingdom Hearts IV Is Still Coming!

While Missing-Link is no more, fans can take solace in the fact that Kingdom Hearts IV remains in active development. Revealed during the Kingdom Hearts 20th Anniversary event in 2022, Square Enix recently provided a small update, confirming that work on the game is progressing. After years of anticipation, this news should provide some comfort to those disappointed by the cancellation of Missing-Link.
