The 10 Best Game Boy Advance & Nintendo DS Games on Nintendo Switch – SwitchArcade Special

Author : Ellie Jan 27,2025

A curated selection of retro Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the Nintendo Switch eShop. While Nintendo Switch Online boasts a strong GBA library, this list focuses on titles independently released on the eShop. We've compiled ten favorites – four GBA and six DS – presented without any specific ranking.

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a personal preference, this GBA iteration offers a solid alternative. A worthwhile comparison piece, it provides a potentially more streamlined experience. Steel Empire remains enjoyable regardless of the platform, often appealing even to non-shooter enthusiasts.

Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

The Mega Man X series experienced some setbacks on home consoles, but the Game Boy Advance saw the rise of a true successor: Mega Man Zero. This marks the beginning of an exceptional side-scrolling action series, though its initial entry might not be the smoothest in presentation. Subsequent installments refine the formula, but the first game remains the ideal starting point.

Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A Mega Man double-feature, justified by the distinct gameplay styles of Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network. This RPG boasts a unique battle system blending action and strategy. Its core concept – a virtual world within electronic devices – is cleverly executed. While later entries show diminishing returns, the original offers considerable fun.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

The Castlevania Advance Collection is worth playing in its entirety, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For many, it surpasses even the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. Its soul-collecting mechanic encourages exploration, and the engaging gameplay makes grinding enjoyable. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal, solidifying its place as a top-tier GBA title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

The original Shantae achieved cult status, but limited distribution hindered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on DSiWare broadened its appeal, establishing Shantae's lasting presence across console generations. Its origins are somewhat ambiguous, stemming from an unreleased GBA title. Interestingly, that GBA game is slated for release soon and could potentially warrant inclusion on a future list.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Arguably a GBA title due to its origins, Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. The first game is exceptional, though later installments also garner praise. A compelling choice for fans of the genre.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick features equally strong writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, you manipulate objects to save individuals and uncover the mystery surrounding your death. A captivating and well-regarded title.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

Considered one of the best Nintendo DS games, The World Ends With You is ideally experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version serves as a viable alternative for those without access to a DS. A truly exceptional game.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection encompasses all Nintendo DS Castlevania titles. While all are worthwhile, Dawn of Sorrow benefits from improved button controls over its original touch controls. All three DS entries in this collection are highly recommended.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

A franchise that thrives on the DS/3DS ecosystem, Etrian Odyssey III receives a commendable port to the Switch. Each Etrian Odyssey game offers a substantial RPG experience, with Etrian Odyssey III being the largest and most challenging.
