Ace Attorney Investigations Collection Arrives on Switch

Author : Connor Jan 23,2025

Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for September 4th, 2024! Summer's warmth has faded, leaving behind memories both sweltering and sweet. I've grown a bit wiser, and I'm thankful for sharing that journey with you all. As autumn arrives, I want to express my gratitude – you're the best gaming companions anyone could ask for. Today's update is packed: a bounty of reviews, fresh releases, and enticing sales! Let's dive in!

Reviews & Mini-Views

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)

The Nintendo Switch era has gifted us with second chances at classic titles, and the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection is a prime example. Finally, the only unlocalized Ace Attorney game arrives, bringing Miles Edgeworth's adventures after Trials & Tribulations into the spotlight. This sequel masterfully builds upon previous storylines, enhancing the original game in retrospect. The English localization is a welcome addition for fans.

These Investigations titles offer a fresh perspective, showcasing the prosecution's side. While the core mechanics remain similar—gathering clues, questioning witnesses, and solving cases—the unique presentation and Edgeworth's character add a distinct flavor. The pacing differs from the main series, sometimes leading to lengthy cases, but overall, fans of the main Ace Attorney games will find this sub-series enjoyable. If the first game feels slow, persevere – the second is significantly better and provides context for the first.

Bonus features are generous, including an art and music gallery, a story mode for relaxed play, and the option to switch between original and updated graphics/soundtracks. A handy dialogue history feature, a must-have for this type of game, is also included.

The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection offers a compelling contrast between its two games. The official localization of the second game is fantastic, and the extra features create a superb package. With this release, every Ace Attorney game (excluding the Professor Layton crossover) is now available on Switch. If you've enjoyed the other titles, this is a must-have.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)

A sequel to Gimmick! is truly unexpected! Sunsoft's late NES title, initially released only in Scandinavia, now has a follow-up thirty years later. Developed by Bitwave Games, this sequel stays incredibly true to the original, perhaps too much for some. However, its faithfulness is commendable.

Six lengthy, challenging physics-based platforming levels await. The difficulty is steep, but an easier mode is available for those seeking a smoother experience. The protagonist's star attack returns as a versatile tool for combat and puzzle-solving. Collectibles add replayability, offering customization options.

The game's length depends on your skill, but expect a tough challenge. Frequent checkpoints mitigate frustration. The charming visuals and music help maintain a lighthearted atmosphere, but don't underestimate the difficulty. Mastering platforming and using the star strategically is key.

Gimmick! 2 is a surprisingly excellent sequel, smartly building upon the original without losing its identity. Fans of the first game will love this, and challenging platformer enthusiasts should definitely check it out. However, those seeking a relaxed experience should be warned – it's as demanding as its predecessor.

Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)

Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, shifting from the original's action-platformer style to a shoot 'em up experience reminiscent of Lords of Thunder. Surprisingly, it works well, although the Switch's hardware struggles at times. Despite this, the intense action, rocking soundtrack, and creepy visuals make it enjoyable.

The weapon system adds depth. The main gun weakens when depleted, necessitating use of the melee weapon to recharge it. A rotating third weapon adds further strategic options. The dash maneuver is both offensive and defensive. Mastering this juggling act is key to survival.

While different from the first game, Mecha Therion maintains a similar atmosphere. It's a stylish heavy metal shoot 'em up that avoids common genre pitfalls. Performance may be better on other platforms, but the Switch version is perfectly playable.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)

Licensed games are often aimed at fans, and Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash is no exception. It delivers ample fan service, excelling in its presentation of the source material's world, characters, and writing. The meta-systems also reward dedicated fans.

However, non-fans may find little to enjoy. The mini-games are limited and repetitive, lacking the depth needed for lasting appeal. The story unfolds in a way that only resonates with those familiar with the Umamusume universe.

Even for fans, the game's focus feels misplaced. The visuals, sound, and world are well-executed, and unlockables might keep dedicated players engaged for a while. But the experience fades quickly, and those unfamiliar with the source material will likely lose interest soon.

SwitchArcade Score: 3/5

Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)

Sunsoft is known in the West for titles like Blaster Master, but this collection showcases a lesser-known side: charming 8-bit games popular in Japan. Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection offers three such titles, all fully localized, in a single package.

The collection includes Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. All three games feature save states, rewind, display options, and art galleries. The English localization is a significant achievement.

The games themselves vary in quality. 53 Stations is frustrating, but charming. Ripple Island is a solid adventure game. The Wing of Madoola is ambitious but inconsistent. While not top-tier NES games, they're not bad either.

This collection is a treat for Sunsoft fans and those who enjoy exploring lesser-known games. The care given to the localization and presentation makes this a worthwhile purchase.
