Amazon to shutter its app store on Android after more than ten years on mobile

Amazon is shutting down its Android app store on August 20th, 2024. The service will continue to operate on Fire TV and Fire Tablets. Launched in 2011, the Amazon Appstore's closure comes as a surprise to many developers and users.

While apps installed from the store may remain functional, future updates and support are not guaranteed, according to Amazon's support page. This means users should consider alternative app sources for future app installations and updates.

The timing is ironic, given the recent rise of alternative app stores. Amazon's Appstore never achieved widespread popularity, likely due to a lack of compelling features to attract users, unlike competitors offering promotions such as free games.
