Balatro Dev Reveals Personal Favorite Game of 2024

Author : Penelope Jan 29,2025

LocalThunk, the solo developer behind the hugely successful indie game Balatro, has declared Animal Well his Game of the Year for 2024. This accolade, playfully dubbed the "Golden Thunk" award, highlights the immersive gameplay and stylish secrets of Animal Well, calling it developer Billy Basso's "true masterpiece." Balatro, a pixel art deck-building game, sold over 3.5 million copies in 2024, receiving critical acclaim alongside other notable indie titles like Neva, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, and UFO 50. However, Animal Well impressed LocalThunk enough to earn his top spot.

Basso, in response, lauded LocalThunk as a humble and kind developer. The positive interaction between the two developers generated considerable online enthusiasm, showcasing the supportive nature of the indie game community.

Beyond Animal Well, LocalThunk also highlighted several other 2024 favorites, including Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers, Arco, Nova Drift, Ballionaire, and Mouthwashing, providing brief commentary on each. Interestingly, Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers, like Balatro, is a solo-developed pixel art deck-builder.

Despite Balatro's phenomenal success, LocalThunk continues to actively support the game with free updates. Three "Friends of Jimbo" updates have already introduced crossover content from popular franchises such as Cyberpunk 2077, Among Us, and Dave the Diver, with hints of further collaborations on the horizon.
