Breakout Beyond Puts a New Angle on Atari's Classic Brick-Breaker

Author : Riley Mar 19,2025

Nearly 50 years after the release of the iconic 1976 arcade game, Breakout is getting a fresh, exciting makeover. Breakout Beyond, developed by Choice Provisions (the creators of the acclaimed BIT.TRIP series), puts a unique sideways spin on the classic brick-breaker formula.

Maintaining the core paddle-and-ball mechanics, Breakout Beyond innovates by introducing a left-to-right progression. The objective remains the same—smash those bricks!—but the experience is amplified with increasingly intense light and effects as your combo meter climbs.

Special bricks unlock spectacular visual and gameplay enhancements, from massive explosions to a powerful laser cannon. Prepare for a challenging yet rewarding experience with 72 planned levels, plus an unlockable endless mode featuring a global online leaderboard for bragging rights. And if you prefer some collaborative brick-busting, Breakout Beyond also offers local two-player co-op.

PlayInitially slated as an Intellivision Amico exclusive in 2020, *Breakout Beyond* has found a new home. Atari acquired the game's development rights and is bringing it to a wider audience.

"We're thrilled to bring this gem to our players," stated Ethan Stearns, Atari's senior director of games publishing. "The team saw a brilliant concept—preserving the core gameplay of Breakout while completely reinventing its formula. Breakout Beyond is a worthy addition to the Breakout legacy, and we eagerly anticipate the incredible combos players will create."

The Intellivision Amico, announced in 2018 with a projected 2020 release, remains unreleased, facing numerous setbacks and delays over the years. Atari acquired the Intellivision brand and intellectual property last year, but not the Amico console itself.

Breakout Beyond launches later this year on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Atari VCS.
