Nintendo appears to have started sending 'Out of Stock' signage for the Switch 2 to retailers, even before the console officially goes on sale.
With the Switch 2 launch just two days away on Thursday, June 5, Nintendo is anticipating that demand will far exceed the initial supply of units.
As shared on Reddit and reported by VGC, these official 'Out of Stock' signs are now arriving at U.S. stores alongside the regular promotional material for the console and the launch title Mario Kart World. "Got these signs in from Nintendo," posted a Reddit user who works at a store planning a midnight launch event. "They've got jokes."
Nintendo has already warned consumers about potential Switch 2 stock shortages, with supplies expected to be especially tight in Japan due to overwhelming interest. For the U.S. market, the company has aimed to mitigate uncertainties around tariffs on Chinese-made goods by prioritizing consoles manufactured in Vietnam.
However, nearly every major console launch faces similar supply challenges, and securing a Switch 2 pre-order has already required significant effort from eager fans. Simply put, the Switch 2 selling out at launch seems almost guaranteed.
These 'Out of Stock' signs will serve a practical purpose for store employees, who are likely to face countless questions about whether any consoles are still available for purchase.
"Every retail worker knows they'll have 10 people a week, maybe more, stand in front of that sign and yell at them about going to get the extra consoles from 'the back' like the stock room is Narnia for electronics," one user replied.

Simultaneously, informing customers that an item is out of stock is a well-known marketing tactic to signal its popularity and high demand. In effect, it serves as free advertising.
"This is a type of advertising meant to make consumers want it more," another fan commented. "It demonstrates high demand and creates a psychological urge to secure one."
In preparation for the Switch 2's arrival, Nintendo has rolled out updates for the original Switch model and the popular Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Additionally, we recently saw our first glimpse of the enhanced Pokémon Scarlet and Violet running on the new hardware.
For those fortunate enough to get a Switch 2 this week, Nintendo has also shared important guidance about not removing the protective plastic film from the console's screen.
