Released in September 2024, the Google Streamer 4K succeeds the Chromecast 4K with enhancements across nearly every aspect. According to Google, the upgraded processor is up to 22% faster, backed by double the memory (2GB) and four times the onboard storage (32GB). Connectivity options include high-speed 802.11ac Wi-Fi and gigabit Ethernet. The device now uses a USB Type-C port for power, making replacement adapters easier to find. There’s even a remote-finder button on the main unit in case you misplace the redesigned remote.
Like other premium streaming devices, the Google Streamer 4K supports 4K HDR streaming with Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HDR10+ formats. While it includes an HDMI 2.1 port, output is capped at 4K @ 60fps. Dolby Atmos spatial audio is supported when paired with compatible speakers like the Sonos Arc. The device also acts as a smart home controller, functioning as both a Thread border router and a Matter hub.
The Google Streamer 4K holds its own against the Apple TV and Roku Ultra, but at a more accessible price. While the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max costs less, Android TV offers a cleaner, ad-free interface. For pure streaming performance, the Nvidia Shield TV Pro is superior—but it sells for $200. Factor in the bonus smart home integration and Matter and Thread compatibility, and the Google Streamer 4K becomes an outstanding all-around package.
