NPIXEL has announced the closure of Gran Saga, marking the end of its brief international journey. The service will officially terminate on April 30th, 2025, and in-app purchases (IAPs) along with downloads have already been disabled.
Originally launched in Japan in 2021 with great success, Gran Saga's global version was introduced in November 2024 but lasted only six months before the shutdown decision was made.
The primary reason for the closure appears to be financial instability and the challenge of sustaining a viable service. Despite an impressive start, Gran Saga struggled to establish a strong presence in the fiercely competitive global market.
The genre is dominated by well-established games with loyal followings, making it extremely challenging for newcomers to gain traction without offering something revolutionary. Although Gran Saga achieved early success in Japan, that momentum did not translate globally, resulting in an early exit.
This closure is part of a broader trend of gacha RPGs shutting down. Recently, I reported on the closure of My Hero Academia: The Strongest Hero, and it's just one of many. Several others have also succumbed to the pressures of an oversaturated market. With numerous choices available, players tend to remain loyal to familiar titles, making it difficult for new or niche games to endure.
For those who made purchases recently and are seeking a refund, you have until May 30th to submit a request. However, refunds may not be possible if you've already used your purchases or due to other store policies.
If you were among the players exploring Ethprozen, this farewell is undoubtedly difficult, yet it's becoming increasingly common in the mobile gaming industry.
