When The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives on May 22, 2026, it will be the first new Star Wars film in over six and a half years. Then, just four days later on May 26, Grand Theft Auto VI releases – the first new GTA game in more than 12 years. So, which one do you think will make the bigger splash? And which might feel a bit too familiar?
On paper, these are two of the biggest pop culture moments of the year – a true 2026 "Barbenheimer." A fresh Star Wars movie! A new Grand Theft Auto!! GTA 6 is already a guaranteed phenomenon, but The Mandalorian and his tiny companion feel like a much less certain bet.
It reminds me of being a kid and telling my grandmother I could eat pizza every single day. I believed it completely! She insisted I'd eventually get sick of it. While daily pizza sounds incredible, my grandmother was absolutely right. Eating it every day would become gross, unhealthy, and ultimately bad for the pizza seller because I’d eventually want to avoid pizza for a long, long time.
That's where Star Wars finds itself today: it's pizza every single day, served again and again. Grand Theft Auto, however, has spent years building anticipation for a new release. In many ways, that long-awaited excitement is a core part of the franchise's appeal. It's a lesson Lucasfilm and Disney would be wise to learn.
