The long-awaited Blade reboot appears to have met its final demise. The Marvel Cinematic Universe project has faced numerous production challenges in recent years, but now seems permanently stalled - most tragically depriving fans of Mahershala Ali's portrayal of the iconic Daywalker.
Musician Flying Lotus recently confirmed the project's cancellation during an X (formerly Twitter) discussion about his involvement. "I guess we're so far from it even being a possibility now," said the artist, who was slated to compose the film's score. "Yeah I was signed on to write music for the new BLADE movie before it fell through. Maybe it'll come around again but I doubt it. Would have been fun though."
Adding to the disappointment, Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter revealed on The John Campea Show that the film was planned as a 1920s period piece before collapsing. This setting would have offered unique opportunities for both costume and production design.
Actor Delroy Lindo, who was cast alongside Ali, corroborated these reports to Entertainment Weekly. "When Marvel approached me, they seemed genuinely interested in my creative input," Lindo recalled. "The collaborative process with the producers, writer and director was exciting - both conceptually and for my character's development. Then suddenly everything derailed."
Originally announced at 2019's San Diego Comic-Con, Blade was originally scheduled for November 2023 release before being pulled from Marvel's calendar. The project cycled through multiple directors including Yann Demange and Bassam Tariq without gaining traction.

Despite the setbacks, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige maintains hope for the project. "We remain committed to Blade and Mahershala's interpretation of the character," Feige told Omelete in November 2024 after the film's schedule removal. "Whenever we recalibrate a project's direction or timeline, we keep fans informed. While the path forward requires refinement, the character will absolutely join the MCU."
