Matthew Lillard Returns for Scream 7

Author : Andrew Apr 18,2025

Matthew Lillard is set to make a thrilling return in Scream 7, as reported by Deadline. Lillard, renowned for his chilling performance as Stuart "Stu" Macher in the iconic 1996 Scream film, is slated to star in the upcoming installment. This news has sparked excitement and curiosity among fans, especially considering Stu's fate in the original movie. It remains unclear whether Lillard will reprise his role as Stu or take on a new character, adding an element of mystery to his involvement. Lillard himself teased his participation in the film through an Instagram post, which you can view below.

The Scream franchise is seeing a reunion of sorts with Lillard joining forces with Neve Campbell, who will reprise her role as Sidney Prescott, and Courteney Cox in Scream 7. The cast is further bolstered by the inclusion of Scott Foley, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown.

The road to Scream 7 has been fraught with challenges. In November 2023, star Melissa Barrera was dismissed from the project following her social media posts about the Gaza conflict. The very next day, it was announced that Jenna Ortega, who played a central role alongside Barrera in the series since Scream (2022), would not return for Scream 7. This meant the departure of both Carpenter sisters, who had been key figures in the recent films.

Amidst these developments, director Christopher Landon stepped down in December 2023, describing his experience as a "dream job that turned into a nightmare." However, the franchise has found a new direction with Kevin Williamson, the screenwriter behind Scream, Scream 2, and Scream 4, stepping in to direct.

Radio Silence, the duo behind Scream and Scream 6, confirmed in August 2023 that they would not be returning to direct Scream 7 but will continue to serve as executive producers. Guy Busick, who co-wrote the last two entries, is set to pen the screenplay for the seventh installment.

Scream 7 is slated to hit theaters on February 27, 2026, promising to deliver another dose of suspense and horror to fans of the long-standing franchise.
