If you were hoping to catch a glimpse of Gears of War: E-Day during the Xbox Games Showcase 2025, you might have been let down. Today's event had little to show for Microsoft's flagship series—with no updates on Forza, Halo, or the highly anticipated Fable reboot.
Xbox head Phil Spencer did reassure fans, however, that 2026 will be the year Gears of War: E-Day finally arrives, along with the next Forza title, as part of Xbox’s 25th anniversary celebrations.
This new entry in the long-running Gears of War franchise was officially revealed a year ago at the Xbox Games Showcase 2024. E-Day will take place 14 years before the events of the original Gears of War, serving as an origin story for beloved characters Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago. John DiMaggio and Carlos Ferro are set to reprise their iconic voice roles.
"Gears of War: E-Day isn't just our next big release—it's a return to the elements that made Gears of War truly memorable and authentic," said Mike Crump, head of The Coalition studio.
Earlier this year, People Can Fly—the studio behind Bulletstorm and Gears of War: Judgment—was confirmed as a co-developer on E-Day, working alongside Xbox’s internal studio, The Coalition.
Today's Xbox Showcase also included a brief tease from Phil Spencer regarding Halo’s long-awaited comeback, possibly including a remaster of the series' first game. For a full recap, see all the announcements from the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2025.
