Nintendo has confirmed the release date for the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie: March 26, 2027.
The announcement was made through the new Nintendo Today! app, which debuted during the Nintendo Direct March 2025. No further details about the film were shared.
Legendary game creator Shigeru Miyamoto revealed the company's new initiative as a surprise at the end of the showcase. This all-in-one mobile application is packed with features dedicated Nintendo fans won't want to miss.
This central hub for everything Nintendo functions as a daily calendar and news feed, delivering updates to players in real time. As an example, Miyamoto stated that following next week's Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, fans can log into the Nintendo Today app to get all the latest information, with more news following on a "daily" basis.
The major reveals have already begun, with the Zelda movie date confirmation expected to drive many fans to download the app in hopes of similar blockbuster announcements. It was noteworthy that Nintendo's own news app broke the Zelda movie story ahead of the company's social media channels.
Nintendo and Sony Pictures first announced plans for a live-action The Legend of Zelda movie in November 2023. Wes Ball (The Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) is set to direct, with Avi Arad and Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto producing.
However, very little is known about the movie itself. Ball has expressed his desire to create a "live-action Miyazaki," a nod to the revered filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, the director behind Studio Ghibli and classics like My Neighbor Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, and Spirited Away. Ball still envisions the Zelda adaptation as a "serious" take that feels authentic, and has clarified that he plans to use minimal motion capture for this "grounded" film.
