"Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrades with Second USB-C Port"

Author : Nicholas May 12,2025

The long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 has been officially announced, unveiling a range of exciting new features. Among the highlights are the innovative Joy-Cons, which now include optical sensors to function as a mouse, enhancing gameplay versatility. But that's not the only upgrade; the Switch 2 introduces a significant quality-of-life improvement that you might have overlooked during the initial reveal trailer.

The original Nintendo Switch featured a single USB-C port on the underside of the tablet. However, the Nintendo Switch 2 doubles down on connectivity with two USB-C ports. This may seem like a minor tweak, but it's a game-changer. With the original Switch, using multiple accessories simultaneously often required unreliable adapters, which sometimes posed a risk of damaging the console due to the complex and non-standard USB-C specification used.

The first Switch claimed USB-C compliance, but in reality, its USB-C connector had a unique and intricate specification. This necessitated reverse-engineering by third-party manufacturers to ensure their docks and accessories worked safely and effectively, avoiding potential damage to the console's internal pins.

The addition of a second USB-C port on the Switch 2 suggests a shift toward adhering to standard USB-C protocols, which have significantly evolved since the original Switch's 2017 release. With USB-C standards now more robust, including support for high-speed data transfer, 4K display outputs, and even the powerful Thunderbolt standard, the Switch 2 could open up a plethora of new accessory possibilities. Imagine connecting an external GPU to enhance gaming performance or using high-wattage power solutions effortlessly.

The bottom port of the Switch 2 is likely tailored for use with Nintendo’s official dock, where you'll connect most of your accessories. Meanwhile, the top port could ideally support fast charging, display outputs, and other functionalities, making it easier to use external power banks and additional accessories simultaneously. This dual-port design significantly enhances the user experience compared to the original console.

As USB-C standards have matured, they now support a variety of connections, including external displays, networking, data transfer, and high-wattage power. The inclusion of a second port on the Switch 2 indicates a move towards embracing these universal standards, offering a seamless integration with a wide array of accessories.

While the bottom port may be more sophisticated, designed primarily for use with the official dock, the top port's potential to support fast charging and display outputs enhances its utility. It would be counterintuitive for Nintendo to add a secondary port without leveraging its full capabilities, allowing users to connect external power banks and other accessories concurrently.

For more details on the Switch 2, including its intriguing C button, we'll need to wait until April 2, 2025, when Nintendo hosts its Switch 2 Direct presentation.
