Nintendo has released another system update for the Switch just before the highly anticipated launch of the Switch 2.
Switch System Update 20.1.0 introduces minor but meaningful changes, including the ever-present "general system stability improvements." More notably, the update refreshes the Parental Control settings' appearance and changes the Nintendo Switch Online launch sound from the Home Menu.
The new NSO startup chime features a more energetic tone - likely previewing the audio experience coming to Switch 2. Twitter user @Nexusvoyager shared a comparison showing the sound differences:

The update also introduced new navigation sounds and completely redesigned the NSO application interface, possibly aligning it with the Switch 2's upcoming version:

Switch system analyst @OatmealDome discovered additional changes including theme nomenclature updates ("Basic White/Black" renamed to "Basic Light/Dark") and new dark theme support for the NSO app:

This update is particularly important for users planning to transfer data between Switch and Switch 2 via local communication, as it's required for the migration process.
The timing coincides with the Switch 2's June 5 launch. While reports surfaced about someone obtaining an early unit, Nintendo quickly responded to prevent leaks. Without the day-one patch, any early hardware would be non-functional anyway.
Recent Switch 2 developments include:
- Hands-on experience with Mario Kart World
- Performance upgrades for original Switch games
- Variable refresh rate details
- GameChat phone verification requirements
Nintendo assures consumers that despite rapid pre-order sellouts, sufficient stock will be available for the holiday season.
