Pokémon GO Support Ending for Certain Devices

Pokemon GO to Drop Support for Older Devices in 2025

Starting in March and June 2025, Pokemon GO will no longer be compatible with certain older mobile devices due to upcoming updates. This change primarily affects 32-bit Android devices, leaving many long-time players needing to upgrade their phones to continue their gameplay.

Launched in July 2016, Pokemon GO boasts a substantial player base, even after nearly a decade. While its peak popularity saw over 232 million active players in its first year, recent data from December 2024 still indicates over 110 million active players within the preceding month. However, this update will unfortunately impact a portion of this player community.

Niantic's decision to end support for 32-bit Androids aims to optimize the game's performance on modern devices. An announcement on January 9th detailed the upcoming updates, impacting Android devices downloaded from the Samsung Galaxy Store (March 2025) and 32-bit Android devices from Google Play (June 2025). While a complete list of affected devices wasn't provided, Niantic confirmed that 64-bit Android devices and all iPhones will remain compatible.

Affected Devices (Partial List):

  • Samsung Galaxy S4, S5, Note 3, J3
  • Sony Xperia Z2, Z3
  • Motorola Moto G (1st generation)
  • LG Fortune, Tribute
  • OnePlus One
  • HTC One (M8)
  • ZTE Overture 3
  • Several Android devices released before 2015

Players using affected devices are urged to safeguard their login credentials. While account access will be restored after upgrading to a compatible device, gameplay will be unavailable until then, including any purchased Pokecoins.

Despite this setback for some players, 2025 promises exciting developments for the broader Pokemon franchise. The release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A is anticipated, along with rumored projects like Pokemon Black and White remakes and a potential new Let's Go series entry. Further details regarding Pokemon GO's future may be revealed during a rumored Pokemon Presents showcase on February 27th.
