PlayStation Announces Optional PSN Accounts for Some PC Game Ports
Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts will no longer be mandatory for playing several PlayStation 5 titles ported to PC. This change, effective after the January 30, 2025 release of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on PC, impacts several high-profile titles.
Games Affected:
The following games will allow PC players to bypass the PSN login requirement:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- God of War Ragnarök
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered (releasing April 2025)
However, titles such as Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut and Until Dawn will continue to require PSN accounts.
Incentives for PSN Users:
While PSN is optional, Sony is offering incentives to players who choose to link their accounts:
- Trophies and Friend Management: Standard PSN features will remain accessible.
- In-Game Bonuses: Exclusive rewards are available for each title:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Spider-Man 2099 Black Suit and Miles Morales 2099 Suit.
- God of War Ragnarök: Armor of the Black Bear set and a resource bundle.
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered: 50 bonus points and Ellie's Jordan's Jacket skin.
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: Nora Valiant outfit.
Sony hints at future incentives, promising continued development of PSN benefits for PC players.
Addressing Past Backlash:
This policy shift follows significant criticism from PC gamers regarding previous titles like Helldivers 2, which was initially delisted in numerous regions due to PSN account requirements, and God of War Ragnarök, both receiving negative feedback on Steam. The limited global availability of PSN (approximately 70 countries) presented accessibility issues for a large portion of the player base. Concerns around data privacy and security also contributed to the negative reception.
This move by Sony represents a response to player feedback and a potential adjustment to their PC gaming strategy. The long-term implications of this change remain to be seen.
