Square Enix, the publisher of Dragon Quest, is preparing to bring back another beloved title in the series: Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past.
As reported by MP1st, internal documents obtained by the outlet outline multiple unannounced projects currently in development, one of which is a remake of the seventh mainline Dragon Quest game.
Interestingly, while other remakes in the pipeline have been explicitly labeled as HD remakes, that designation does not apply here—at least, according to MP1st. This implies the upcoming project could involve more than just a visual upgrade or a simple remaster. The exact nature of these changes remains unclear, and an official announcement may not arrive for some time.
Based on the leaked information, this new version of Dragon Quest 7 is expected to launch sometime in early 2026 through 2027, aligning with Square Enix’s upcoming fiscal year and financial outlook.
In other Dragon Quest updates, keep in mind that Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake is set to release on October 30, 2025, for PC (via Steam and Microsoft Store), PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X/S. Square Enix has also confirmed that the RPG will be available on the Nintendo Switch 2. Additionally, details were recently shared about pre-order bonuses and a new Collector's Edition.
Recently, Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii reassured fans that Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate has not been canceled. Initially announced during the series' 35th anniversary celebration in 2021—the first mainline title since 2017's Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age—updates have been sparse. The last official word came in February, when Horii broke his silence to confirm that the Square Enix development team is “working hard."
"Yes, it’s true—I can't share any details at this time, and I apologize for that," he stated in May. "We are pouring considerable effort into the project. All I can say is that the next installment will be excellent, and we’re working tirelessly to deliver it. Please look forward to it—that’s the only message I can share right now."
