Final Fantasy 9 Remake May Get Announced Soon

Square Enix Teases Final Fantasy 9 Remake

On April 7, Square Enix sparked excitement among fans with a tweet that many believe hints at an upcoming FF9 project. The tweet featured an image with the poignant quote, "My memories will be part of the sky…", a line spoken by the cherished black mage Vivi at the conclusion of FF9. Accompanied by the caption "If you know, you know," and a crying emoji, the post, while not an official announcement, has ignited speculation about a possible FF9 remake.

FF9 Remake Rumors Blaze After Square Enix's Latest Tweet

The demand for an FF9 remake has been vocal and persistent, driven by the game's enduring charm and the deep emotional bonds fans have with its characters. Notably, Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi has cited FF9 as his favorite in the series. Following the success of the Final Fantasy 7 remake series, and with FF9's 25th anniversary on the horizon, anticipation for a similar treatment for FF9 is high.

Insights from Final Fantasy XIV producer Naoki Yoshida add to the speculation. In a 2024 interview with Video Games, Yoshida discussed the challenges of remaking FF9, stating, "Of course, I do know there are requests for Final Fantasy IX to be made, but when you think about Final Fantasy IX, it’s a game with huge volume... When you think about all of that volume, I wonder if it’s possible to remake that as a single title. It’s a difficult one. It is a tough question."

FF9 Remake Rumors Blaze After Square Enix's Latest Tweet

To celebrate FF9's 25th anniversary, Square Enix launched a dedicated website, hinting at various celebratory projects. This has further fueled rumors of a potential remake. A closer look at the site reveals new Formism Figures of Zidane and Garnet available for pre-order on Square Enix’s e-store. The product descriptions suggest a modernized take on the characters' appearances, stating, "To commemorate the 25th anniversary, the texture of the costume has been reinterpreted and recreated in three dimensions." This has led many to speculate that these updated designs could preview what fans might see in an FF9 remake.

While no official announcement has been made, the combination of Square Enix's cryptic tweet and the new character designs on the 25th anniversary website provides fans with ample reason to believe that a Final Fantasy 9 remake could be on the horizon.
