When starting a new game in Stardew Valley, you can choose to adopt either a cat or a dog to join you on your farm. Previously limited to one pet per save, the 1.6 update released in early 2024 now allows you to adopt multiple pets, adding more life to your farmstead.

To unlock this feature, you must first maximize your friendship level with your initial pet. Ensure you fill their water bowl daily using your Watering Can, except on rainy or snowy days when it fills automatically. Additionally, interact with your pet daily to pet them; a heart bubble above their head indicates you've done so. Monitor your pet's friendship progress through the "Animals" tab in your pause menu.

Once the friendship meter is full, Marnie will send you a notice via mail, offering you the chance to adopt additional pets from her shop south of your farm. If you haven't adopted a pet by the end of your first year, you'll still receive this notice at the start of Year 2.

After selecting your new pets, head to Robin's carpentry shop in the northern part of Pelican Town to purchase Pet Bowls. These are essential as they serve as a water source and a "home" for your pets, preventing them from running away if neglected. Each Pet Bowl costs 5,000g and requires 25 x Hardwood, obtainable with a Copper Axe or better. It's wise to build these bowls before adopting new pets to maintain their friendship levels.
