Yoko Taro Fears AI Will Jobless Game Creators, Reducing Them to 'Bards'

Author : Emery Jul 16,2025

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the gaming industry has become a growing topic of discussion in recent years. Among those raising concerns is Yoko Taro, director of the *NieR* series, who has voiced fears that AI could eventually replace human game creators. His thoughts were shared during a recent panel-style interview with Japanese developers known for their narrative-driven titles, including Kotaro Uchikoshi (*Zero Escape*, *AI: The Somnium Files*), Kazutaka Kodaka (*Danganronpa*), and Jiro Ishii (*428: Shibuya Scramble*), as translated by Automaton.

When asked about the future direction of adventure games, both Yoko and Uchikoshi touched on the potential—and risks—of AI in storytelling. Uchikoshi expressed his belief that AI-generated adventure games may one day become mainstream due to the rapid advancement of technology. However, he noted that current AI still falls short when it comes to producing truly exceptional writing that rivals human creativity. He emphasized the importance of preserving the “human touch” in game development to stay ahead of the curve.

Yoko echoed similar concerns, stating plainly, “I too believe that game creators may lose their jobs because of AI.” He speculated that within the next 50 years, game creators might be viewed similarly to bards—once revered storytellers now largely replaced by modern forms of media.

Can AI Replicate Creative Storytelling?

When the conversation turned to whether AI could replicate the intricate worlds and complex narratives found in their games—including surprising twists and emotional depth—Yoko and Ishii agreed that it might be possible. Kodaka, however, offered a more nuanced perspective. He acknowledged that while AI might mimic a creator’s unique style, it would not be able to act or evolve like a real creator. He referenced filmmaker David Lynch, pointing out that while someone could write a script imitating Lynch’s surreal style, only Lynch himself could change direction and still make it feel authentic and true to his creative voice.

AI as a Tool for Game Development

Despite the apprehension, some ideas were explored regarding AI's potential use in development. Yoko suggested using AI to generate new story routes in adventure games, opening up possibilities for dynamic content creation. Kodaka, however, cautioned against this approach, noting that such personalization could reduce the sense of a shared experience among players—an essential part of storytelling in games.

Industry Leaders Weigh In on AI

This isn’t the first time prominent figures in the gaming world have commented on AI and generative systems. Developers at studios like Capcom and Activision have already begun experimenting with these technologies. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has also spoken about the potential for creative uses of generative AI, though he highlighted the challenges surrounding intellectual property rights. Even major tech companies like Microsoft and Sony have entered the conversation, acknowledging both the opportunities and ethical questions posed by AI in game design.
