Sydney Sweeney, known for her role in "Madame Web," is set to star in the upcoming movie adaptation of the hit video game "Split Fiction." The film is being directed by Jon M. Chu, acclaimed for his work on "Wicked," and the screenplay is penned by the duo behind "Deadpool & Wolverine," Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Story Kitchen, the video game adaptation specialist responsible for the Sonic films, is now shopping this high-profile talent package to Hollywood studios, anticipating a competitive bidding war.
The role Sweeney will take on in "Split Fiction" remains undecided; she could portray either Zoe or Mio, the game's central sisters. Launched in March, "Split Fiction" quickly became another success story for Hazelight and designer Josef Fares, selling over 2 million copies within its first week and being slated as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2.
IGN's review praised "Split Fiction" with a 9/10 score, describing it as "an expertly crafted co-op adventure that pinballs from one genre extreme to another, Split Fiction is a rollercoaster of constantly refreshed gameplay ideas and styles – and one that’s very hard to walk away from."
Hazelight isn't stopping at "Split Fiction." Their other mega-hit, "It Takes Two," which sold 23 million copies, is also being adapted into a film, with rumors suggesting Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson might star.
While there's always a chance these adaptations might not come to fruition, the current success of video game movies fuels optimism. Last year, Story Kitchen announced adaptations of various other games, including Square Enix's "Just Cause," directed by Ángel Manuel Soto of "Blue Beetle" fame, as well as "Dredge: The Movie," "Kingmakers," "Sleeping Dogs," and even a live-action Toys 'R' Us movie.
Meanwhile, Hazelight continues to innovate, already teasing their next game project.
