Typically enjoyed by four players in fixed partnerships sitting opposite each other, 29 uses 32 cards from a standard 52-card deck. The game employs the traditional "French" suits: hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades, with each suit containing eight cards ranked from high to low as follows: J-9-A-10-K-Q-8-7. The essence of the game lies in capturing tricks with high-value cards.

The scoring system is straightforward yet strategic:

• Jacks: 3 points each
• Nines: 2 points each
• Aces: 1 point each
• Tens: 1 point each
• Other cards (K, Q, 8, 7): No points

This results in a total of 28 points from the cards. Some versions of the game award an additional point for the last trick, bringing the total to 29 points, which explains the game's name. However, many contemporary players do not count the last trick's point, yet the name "29" remains.

In traditional play, the Twos, Threes, Fours, and Fives, which are removed from the full deck, serve as trump indicators, with each player holding one of each suit. The Sixes are utilized for scoring, with each partnership using one red and one black Six to keep track of their scores.
