The long-awaited sequel to the beloved adventure game, Ōkami, announced at last year's Game Awards, has finally received some clarification. While details remain scarce, IGN's recent interview with the project leads revealed crucial information.
Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed the sequel is a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's storyline. Addressing speculation about the character shown in the TGA trailer, director Hideki Kamiya offered a cryptic "I wonder...", but Hirabayashi subsequently confirmed it to be Amaterasu.
The team acknowledged the existence of Ōkamiden, the Nintendo DS prequel starring Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu. Hirabayashi noted mixed fan reception to Ōkamiden, citing both its platform and the absence of key original team members. He emphasized that the new sequel directly continues the narrative of the original Ōkami.
The original Ōkami's ending provides a natural springboard for a sequel, leaving Amaterasu and another character embarking on an unexplored journey. This offers ample opportunity for new challenges and narrative developments.
However, fans will have to exercise patience. The sequel is in very early development, with the early announcement driven by the team's excitement. Hirabayashi indicated a considerable wait before further information is released.
