Avowed boasts a rich character creator, allowing players to customize their character's appearance and select a Background that shapes their backstory and narrative. This guide details each Background and its impact on gameplay.

Avowed offers five distinct Backgrounds, each providing unique dialogue options and a starting weapon. However, all equipment and abilities remain accessible regardless of chosen Background. The five options are: Arcane Scholar, Court Augur, Noble Scion, Vanguard Scout, and War Hero.

Background Details:

• Arcane Scholar: This scholarly Background provides access to unique dialogue options rooted in academic knowledge. Graduating from Bragganhyl Academy, your character's treatise on soul lineages incurred the wrath of a local lord, leading to imprisonment. Subsequently recruited by the emperor, you now work in the imperial archives. Expect dialogue reflecting expertise in the occult, legal precedent, history, and poetry.

• Court Augur: This Background features a tragic backstory, potentially leading to accusations of witchcraft. Visions of villagers turning against you after a crop failure fueled suspicion. You fled to Highcrown, where the emperor appointed you as his personal mystic. Expect dialogue reflecting spiritual insight and interactions with magic and the Gods. This Background is ideal for players envisioning a wizard character and will likely resonate with the Giatta companion.

• Noble Scion: A "failed nepotism baby," this Background depicts a character born into noble privilege but marred by family scandal and dispute. Seeking the emperor's mercy, the Noble Scion becomes a valuable ally to the empire. This is perfect for players wanting to remain loyal to the empire and serve its interests throughout the Living Lands.

• Vanguard Scout: Spared from execution, this Background represents a humble individual who prefers the wilderness to city life and politics. Valuable to the empire for their tracking and espionage skills, this Background suits players who prefer a hunter-style gameplay and will likely connect with the Marius companion.

• War Hero: This Background portrays a character who suppressed a violent Skaenite uprising, earning a place among elite warriors as a reward from the emperor. Loyalty and grit are their hallmarks. This Background is well-suited for players wishing to roleplay a warrior and may find themselves relating most to the Kai companion.

Starting Weapons:

Each Background provides a low-quality, one-handed melee weapon:
