Marathon Release Date Confirmed During Gameplay Reveal Showcase

Marathon Release Date Confirmed During Gameplay Reveal ShowcaseBungie, the developer behind Marathon, officially revealed the game’s release date during its gameplay showcase. Discover what’s in store for players and learn more about the upcoming Closed Alpha Playtest.

Marathon Coming on September 23

Returning to Tau Ceti

Marathon Release Date Confirmed During Gameplay Reveal ShowcaseOn April 13, Bungie—known for Destiny and Halo—unveiled gameplay footage for its upcoming first-person extraction shooter, Marathon. The game centers on multiplayer strategy, pitting six teams of three players against each other and AI enemies in a race to gather loot and extract successfully.

This marks a major shift from the original trilogy. The first Marathon launched in 1994, followed by Marathon 2: Durandal in 1995, and Marathon Infinity in 1996—all story-rich, single-player experiences.

Goff said, “The original trilogy wove together narratives, events, and characters to create a world full of discovery, wonder, and misdirection.” He added, “Our aim with Marathon isn’t to tell a story—it’s to build worlds where stories naturally unfold.”

Making Marathon a "Story Engine"

Marathon is designed as a “story engine”—aimed at creating unforgettable moments and lasting memories, even after failed missions or empty extracts. Game Director Joe Ziegler spoke with PC Gamer last week about this vision.

He explained, “We want players to feel the thrill of adventure and the weight of survival—not just through victory, but through the stories that emerge from failure or unexpected twists. Some of my most memorable gaming moments came from things that didn’t go as planned.”

Working With Fans and Creators

One common concern was that maps felt unfair—spawn camping and preemptive looting made outcomes unpredictable. Ziegler responded, “After hearing this, we redesigned the system so every match begins fresh for everyone. This consistent start lets you and your team plan smarter before each run, then race against others to claim the loot you need.”

Marathon Closed Alpha Playtest

Marathon Release Date Confirmed During Gameplay Reveal ShowcaseBungie will launch its Closed Alpha Playtest for Marathon from April 23 to May 4. Access is restricted to players in the U.S. and Canada.

The alpha will feature four playable Runners: Blackbird, resembling Destiny 2’s Warlock; Void, with tactical invisibility; Locus, armed with a tactical shield; and Glitch, offering high mobility. Three maps will be available—Perimeter, a wooded map for five crews (15 players), and Dire Marsh, a more open map for six crews (18 players).

Remember, this is a closed alpha—invitations are limited, as this is the game’s first public test.

No further playtests have been announced outside these regions. Marathon is scheduled to launch on September 23, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. For the latest updates, explore our article below!
