CES 2025: Gaming Laptops Take Center Stage

Author : Riley Feb 12,2025

CES 2024 showcased a plethora of gaming laptops, revealing key trends shaping the market. This year's offerings demonstrate a significant evolution in design, integration of AI, and innovative display technologies.

Diverse Design Language:

Gaming laptops are no longer confined to a single aesthetic. Manufacturers like Gigabyte and MSI are blurring the lines between productivity and gaming machines. This translates to a wider range of styles, from sleek, professional designs like the Gigabyte Aero series, suitable for any business setting, to bold, visually striking laptops such as the MSI Titan 18 HX AI Dragonforged Edition, proudly displaying its gaming pedigree. RGB lighting remains a prominent feature, with creative implementations including wrap-around rings, illuminated keyboards, and even AniME Dot Matrix LED displays on the Asus ROG Strix Scar series, capable of displaying animations and text.

While innovation isn't revolutionary, expect a diverse selection of laptops, ranging from thin and light to large and powerful, each offering a unique blend of form and function.

The Rise of AI Assistants:

AI integration is advancing, with several vendors showcasing AI assistants designed for seamless PC control without requiring software interaction. MSI's demonstration highlighted an AI assistant capable of automatically optimizing performance settings based on the selected game. However, the practical speed advantage over manual adjustments remains to be seen. Further evaluation is needed to assess the true utility and offline capabilities of these systems.

Display Innovations:

Mini-LED technology is gaining traction, with Asus, MSI, and Gigabyte showcasing high-end models boasting over 1,100 local dimming zones for enhanced contrast and brightness. While OLED still leads in contrast, Mini-LED offers a compelling alternative with higher sustained brightness and no burn-in risk.

Novelties also emerged, including the return of the ASUS ROG Flow X13 with USB4 eGPU support, potentially pairing with an RTX 5090. Lenovo's ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 Rollable, although not strictly a gaming laptop, stands out with its innovative rollable OLED display, expanding from 14 inches to 16.7 inches. While the durability of the mechanism remains a concern, it represents a significant step forward in display technology.

The Ultrabook Gaming Phenomenon:

Ultrabook-style gaming laptops are becoming increasingly prevalent. Manufacturers are embracing thin, light, and premium designs, exemplified by Gigabyte's revamped Aero line. These laptops offer a compelling balance of portability and gaming capabilities, particularly for users who don't require maximum settings on the latest titles. Powerful integrated graphics, coupled with technologies like AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution and Intel XeSS, enable surprisingly playable performance even without dedicated graphics cards. Cloud gaming services like Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce Now provide further alternatives, lessening the reliance on high-end hardware.

The gaming laptop landscape is dynamic, with numerous exciting developments on the horizon. The trends observed at CES 2024 point towards a future of diverse designs, intelligent AI integration, and innovative display technologies, catering to a broader range of user needs and preferences.
