Conquering Zhang Jiao in Dynasty Warriors: Origins: A Comprehensive Guide

One of the initial hurdles in Dynasty Warriors: Origins is the formidable Zhang Jiao, leader of the Yellow Turbans. This guide details strategies for victory.

Phase 1: A Solo Duel

This phase is a one-on-one battle in a spacious arena. Zhang Jiao employs sorcery, launching stones. His attacks vary based on your distance:

• Close Range: Four stones are summoned, demanding swift evasion.
• Long Range: Eight stones are launched in pairs, easily dodged by circling him.

Maintain a safe distance when he summons numerous stones to avoid heavy damage. While primarily a ranged fighter, Zhang Jiao possesses close-combat combos (parryable) and an area-of-effect (AOE) pushback attack. A white glow signals his impending AOE; retreat to avoid damage.

Later, he utilizes unblockable attacks (red aura), summoning numerous rocks or clones. The best counter is to maintain distance until the attack concludes. A sword is recommended for optimal damage output.

Resource Management is Crucial: You likely have limited healing opportunities (around four uses depending on skill upgrades). Meat buns are located near the arena entrance; utilize them strategically during breaks in the fight.

Phase 2: A Clash of Armies

Activating Musou Rage initiates Phase 2, bringing Yellow Turban reinforcements and, thankfully, your own army to the fray. This is an ideal time to heal using the meat buns. Zhang Jiao introduces tornadoes, adding another layer of challenge to the soldier-slaying.

Zhang Jiao will attempt a Grand Tactic, requiring you to eliminate 300 soldiers within a short timeframe. Failure results in a devastating attack. He also summons lightning strikes indicated by a closing ring; evade when it flashes. Musou Mode (standard, not Rage) is highly effective for clearing large numbers of soldiers quickly.

After thwarting two Grand Tactics, Zhang Jiao returns with Phase 1 attacks. However, with your army's support, defeating him should be relatively straightforward, concluding Chapter 1.
