In Dune: Awakening, sandworms are portrayed as a formidable natural force rather than a tool that players can summon at their convenience. Unlike the scenarios depicted in Frank Herbert's novels, where characters could use a thumper to call upon these colossal creatures, this feature will not be available in the game.

According to the game's developers, sandworms function as NPCs with pre-defined patrol routes, schedules, and behaviors embedded within the game engine. Players will not have the ability to strategically summon a sandworm near an enemy base to cause disruption. However, if a sandworm is already in the vicinity, players can try to attract its attention through actions like moving actively through the sand or using a thumper. These actions, however, do not guarantee the sandworm's presence in the area.
The iconic activity of riding sandworms, a staple of the Freman culture as seen in Herbert's books and the broader Dune cinematic universe, will not be featured in Dune: Awakening. The developers have indicated that this omission is due to pressure from the filmmakers involved in the Dune movie franchise.
While there is no guarantee, future post-launch patches might introduce additional content related to Freman culture, possibly including the much-anticipated worm-riding mechanics. For now, however, players will have to navigate the desert world without this thrilling experience.
Dune: Awakening is set to launch on PC on May 20th, with console versions to follow later.
