In an exciting twist, Frostpunk developer 11 bit Studios announced Frostpunk 1886 on April 24 via a Twitter (X) post. This isn't just another sequel; it's a complete remake of the original Frostpunk, reimagined using the powerful Unreal Engine.

The announcement highlighted that Frostpunk 1886 will introduce a fresh Purpose Path, eagerly awaited mod support, and much more, all while staying true to the original's legacy. In a detailed Steam post on the same day, the developers shared their vision for this ambitious project.

11 bit Studios is shifting gears from their proprietary Liquid Engine, used for the first game, to the advanced Unreal Engine. After experiencing the capabilities of Unreal Engine 5 with Frostpunk 2, the team saw an opportunity to enhance the original Frostpunk game. "Our goal is to expand upon it with improved visuals, higher resolution, and all the other possibilities Unreal has to offer," they explained.

Eyeing A 2027 Release

The development of Frostpunk 1886 is currently underway, with a targeted release in 2027. This project aims to serve as an excellent entry point for new players into the Frostpunk universe, while also delivering a refined experience for long-time fans, one they'll want to revisit time and again.

The studio has also teased future content with potential DLCs. 11 bit Studios is committed to a more frequent release schedule, starting with Frostpunk 1886.
