Author : Sebastian Apr 06,2025

It wouldn't be a Nintendo console without a Zelda, and the Nintendo Switch 2 is no exception, though it came in a form we weren't expecting. During today's Nintendo Direct, we learned that Koei Tecmo is developing a new Hyrule Warriors game: a Tears of the Kingdom prequel titled Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. This exciting new title is set to launch this winter.

PlayHyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is the latest addition to the Hyrule Warriors series, featuring characters from the ancient history sections of Tears of the Kingdom. The game focuses on Zelda and her allies, including Rauru, Sonia, and the other Secret Stone holders. It explores Zelda's journey after she travels back in time, where she collaborates with the last Zonai, Rauru, his sister Mineru, and his wife Sonia, to battle Ganondorf and his forces.

The trailer showcased the unique abilities of these champions, including Mineru piloting her mech, Zelda wielding powerful magic, Rauru with his distinctive sword-spear, and brief glimpses of other Sacred Stone wielders.

This marks the third installment in the Hyrule Warriors series, following the original Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which served as a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Age of Calamity was particularly notable for its unexpected narrative twists, earning a 9/10 from us for being "a joy to play and discover" and "a blast from start to finish."
