The opening scenes of the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer immediately showcase that the new console is larger than its predecessor. As the original Joy-Con controllers detach from the first Switch, the tablet section expands and transforms into the upgraded model. This significant increase in size indicates that Nintendo is shifting further from the compact handhelds of its past, aligning more with the trend of larger portable devices like the Steam Deck and iPad.
But just how much bigger is the Switch 2 compared to the original? While Nintendo hasn't released official size specifications, we can estimate the dimensions using the trailer and insights from a recent leak. At CES 2025, we got hands-on experience with a Switch 2 mock-up crafted by peripheral designer Genki. Although we couldn't verify its accuracy at the time, the trailer's console closely matches the mock-up, suggesting our CES measurements are likely quite close to the final product.
Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size
Our estimates suggest that the **Switch 2 features an 8-inch screen**. This measurement refers to the diagonal of the display (excluding the bezels), which is the standard for screen sizes. This matches a rumor from early 2024. We anticipate the display to be approximately **177mm wide and 99mm tall**.
If these estimates hold true, the Switch 2 screen would be nearly 30% larger diagonally and **66% larger in total area** than the original's 6.2-inch LCD. This is a considerable upgrade. While size isn't everything, a larger screen could enhance the gaming experience, provided the display technology is up to par.
How does the Switch 2's screen stack up against other handhelds? The Switch Lite's 5.5-inch LCD is dwarfed by the Switch 2, which is 45% larger diagonally and 111% larger in surface area. The Switch OLED, with its 7-inch display, is also outclassed by the Switch 2, being 14% smaller diagonally and 30% less in total area.
In the realm of portable PCs, the original Steam Deck has a 7-inch screen, while the Steam Deck OLED sports a 7.4-inch display, both with a 16:10 aspect ratio. Despite this, the Switch 2's 8-inch screen will be 8% larger diagonally and 11% larger in overall area than the Steam Deck OLED.
Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size
The larger screen naturally means a larger console. The original Switch was already a stretch for most pockets, and the Switch 2 seems destined for cargo pants or a bag.
Our measurements of the Genki mock-up at CES indicate the Switch 2 is just over **10.5 inches long and 4.5 inches tall**, including the Joy-Cons. By comparing scaled images from the trailer to our photos, we estimate the **Switch 2 to be approximately 265mm long and 115mm tall**.
In comparison, the original Switch measures 239mm long and 102mm tall. Thus, the **Switch 2 is about 25% larger** than its predecessor.
The Switch 2 would be around 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm) and roughly 12% smaller than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm). While we couldn't measure the depth precisely, it appears to be similar to the original Switch's half-inch thickness, suggesting a larger footprint but similar thickness.
Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size
The Switch 2 reveal trailer's animation suggests the Joy-Con controllers will be about the same width as the originals but taller. Using our method of comparing scaled images, we estimate the **Switch 2 Joy-Cons to be around 32mm wide and 115mm tall**—the same width as before but 13mm taller to match the console's new size. This makes the **new Joy-Con approximately 13% larger** than their predecessors.
Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size
Subtracting the Joy-Con dimensions from the overall console size, we estimate the **Switch 2 screen unit to be 200mm long and 115mm tall**. This is around **31% larger than the original Switch's screen unit**.
This size should accommodate the 8-inch 16:9 screen with an approximate 11mm bezel on either side and an 8mm bezel along the top and bottom. This is slimmer on the sides than the original Switch but similar on the top and bottom.
Remember, these are estimates based on our best efforts, and they may differ from Nintendo's official dimensions. However, given our experience with the Genki mock-up, we believe we're close to the mark. We anticipate a console that's approximately 25% larger than the original Switch when we get hands-on with it later this year.
