Palworld, the immensely popular creature-catching survival game, has rolled out its significant v0.5.0 update, introducing crossplay across all platforms among a slew of exciting new features. This update allows players to store Pal data in the Global Palbox and transfer Pals between different worlds, enhancing the game's flexibility and connectivity. A new Dimensional Pal Storage system offers 10 times the capacity of the regular Palbox, accessible not only to guild members but also configurable for personal use with private settings.
The update also introduces a cosmetic armour system, enabling players to change their character's appearance without impacting armour stats through the Antique Dresser. A new photo mode, accessible from the Pal Command Wheel, allows players to capture stunning in-game screenshots by hiding the UI and freely moving the camera. Additionally, the Drafting Table feature lets players combine low-rarity blueprints to create higher-rarity ones, adding depth to the crafting system. Dedicated servers for Mac users are now available, broadening the game's accessibility.
Developer Pocketpair is also working on dedicated servers for the PlayStation 5 version, with a planned release in the future. Since its early access launch in January 2024, Palworld has attracted an incredible 32 million players. The studio has outlined an ambitious content roadmap for 2025, promising an "ending scenario" and additional new content alongside the newly implemented crossplay feature.
Launched on Steam for $30 and simultaneously available on Xbox and PC via Game Pass, Palworld shattered sales and concurrent player number records upon release. Pocketpair's CEO, Takuro Mizobe, noted that the game's launch generated massive profits, which the developer initially struggled to manage. In response to Palworld's success, Pocketpair swiftly formed Palworld Entertainment with Sony, aiming to expand the IP and bring the game to PS5.
However, the game's success is overshadowed by a lawsuit from Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, who allege that Palworld infringes on "multiple" patent rights. They seek an injunction and compensation for damages. Pocketpair has addressed the specific patents in question and made adjustments to the game, such as modifying how players summon Pals. The studio remains committed to defending its position in court.
