Steam Player Count Surges Post-Patch 8 Release

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has released its much-anticipated final patch, marking the end of its remarkable journey. On April 15, 2025, Larian Studios unveiled BG3’s Patch 8, signaling the conclusion of major updates for the game. Following the release, BG3 experienced a significant increase in player numbers, climbing just outside of Steam’s top 10 most played games. Previously hovering around 60,000 concurrent players, the game now boasts over 169,000 players as of the latest count.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke took to Twitter (X) on April 22 to comment on the player surge post-Patch 8. He highlighted the thriving mod support, which allows the studio to shift focus to their "next big thing." It's been confirmed that Larian Studios will move away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to explore new ventures.

Consequently, D&D's parent companies, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, will carry forward the Baldur’s Gate franchise without Larian Studios. They are currently negotiating with other studios for the development of a potential Baldur’s Gate 4.

Larian Studios has poured significant effort into refining BG3, evident in the comprehensive updates and fixes included in this final version. Although this is their last major patch, Larian remains committed to supporting the modding community.
