Possible Revival of Scalebound Development?

Scalebound was once heralded as one of the most ambitious action projects of its time, seamlessly blending dynamic combat, immersive music, and a unique system of interaction with a massive dragon companion. This title was one of the rare Xbox One exclusives that sparked significant excitement but ultimately never saw the light of day. Announced in 2014, the project was officially discontinued by Microsoft in 2017 after years of development.

Recently, Clovers Inc's official account on X shared a video featuring Hideki Kamiya and his colleagues revisiting archived gameplay footage of Scalebound. Kamiya expressed nostalgia for the game's development process and reiterated his pride in the project, despite its cancellation. Kamiya further amplified this sentiment by retweeting the video and directly addressing Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft's gaming division, with a compelling message: "Come on, Phil, let's do this!"

This plea to Phil Spencer underscores Kamiya's ongoing interest in reviving Scalebound. This isn't the first instance of Kamiya expressing a desire to revisit the project; in early 2022, he mentioned his willingness to discuss the possibility of resuming development with Microsoft.

Talk of Scalebound's potential return surfaces periodically, with rumors intensifying in early 2023. Several sources hinted at a possible reboot, although Microsoft has yet to make any official announcements. In an interview with the Japanese publication Game Watch, Phil Spencer responded to questions about Scalebound with a smile and a brief, "I have nothing to add at this time."

Even if Microsoft were to show renewed interest, fans should not expect a swift return of Scalebound. Currently, Hideki Kamiya is engaged in developing a new installment of Okami at Clovers Inc. Should Xbox greenlight the project, Kamiya would only be able to commence work on Scalebound after completing his current commitments. However, the enduring memory of Scalebound among its creators and fans alike offers hope that one day, players might finally experience its long-awaited release.
