Ryan Gosling in Talks to Star in Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film

Shawn Levy, director of Deadpool and Wolverine, is reportedly on the verge of embarking on a journey to a galaxy far, far away, bringing Ryan Gosling along for the ride. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Levy's Star Wars project is in negotiations with Gosling for the lead role. Levy has been developing this film since 2022, with a completed script dating back to last year. He's once again collaborating with Jonathan Tropper, screenwriter for This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project, both directed by Levy.

Plot details remain shrouded in secrecy, with no information yet available on Gosling's potential character or the film's historical placement within the Star Wars timeline. However, it's confirmed to be unrelated to the Skywalker Saga. The Hollywood Reporter also indicates the film is intended as a standalone feature, ruling out a planned trilogy.

Gosling's potential involvement has significantly accelerated the project's timeline. While Levy was previously slated to direct a boy band film starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, THR reports that Gosling's confirmation would prioritize the Star Wars film, pushing production to commence this fall.

The Star Wars franchise is currently undergoing a transitional phase. Following the cancellation of The Acolyte, Disney+ recently concluded its latest series, Skeleton Crew. On the cinematic front, Dave Filoni's Mandalorian and Grogu film completed production in December, targeting a May 22, 2026 release. A new trilogy centered around Daisy Ridley's Rey from the sequel trilogy is also in the works.

A release date for Levy's Star Wars film remains unannounced, pending the project's progress. For a comprehensive overview of upcoming Star Wars content, consult our 2025 preview.
