SAG-AFTRA's Strike Against Video Game Companies: A Fight for AI Protections and Fair Compensation

SAG-AFTRA, the actors' union, launched a strike against major video game companies on July 26th, 2024, following protracted negotiations. The core issue revolves around the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the industry and ensuring fair compensation for performers.

Key Concerns: The union isn't against AI itself, but expresses serious concerns about its potential to replace human actors. The fear is that AI could be used to replicate voices and likenesses without consent, potentially undermining actors' livelihoods and creative control. Smaller roles, often crucial for emerging talent, are also at risk of being automated.

The Strike's Targets: The strike directly impacts companies like Activision, Electronic Arts, Disney Character Voices, and several others. These companies are accused of failing to adequately address SAG-AFTRA's concerns regarding AI usage and worker protections.

Temporary Solutions and Agreements: To mitigate the impact on smaller projects, SAG-AFTRA has introduced the Tiered-Budget Independent Interactive Media Agreement (I-IMA). This agreement, established in February 2024, offers four tiers based on budget size, providing tailored rates and terms for indie and lower-budget games. It also includes crucial AI protections. A January 2024 side deal with Replica Studios allows union actors to license their voice replicas under specific, opt-out conditions.

An Interim Interactive Media Agreement (and a corresponding Localization Agreement) offers temporary solutions covering compensation, AI usage, working conditions, and other vital aspects. Projects adhering to these agreements are exempt from the strike.

Negotiation Timeline and Union Resolve: Negotiations began in October 2022. A 98.32% strike authorization vote in September 2023 demonstrated the union's strong resolve. Despite progress on some issues, the lack of enforceable AI protections remains the primary obstacle. SAG-AFTRA leaders have firmly stated their commitment to securing fair treatment and preventing AI exploitation of their members.
