Enhanced Immersion: Sony Patents DualSense Gun Attachment

A newly published Sony patent unveils a captivating controller accessory: a gun attachment designed to transform the PlayStation DualSense into a more immersive handheld firearm. This innovative addition highlights Sony's ongoing commitment to pushing the boundaries of gaming technology.

While the gaming world buzzes with PlayStation 5 Pro speculation and new game releases, Sony's behind-the-scenes innovations continue to intrigue. This latest patent, filed in June 2024 and published January 2nd, 2025, details a gun-like attachment that seamlessly integrates with the DualSense. Leveraging the controller's existing haptic feedback, this accessory aims to elevate the realism of shooting games.

The attachment, as depicted in patent figures 3, 14, and 15, clips onto the DualSense's base. Held sideways, the space between the R1 and R2 buttons functions as a realistic aiming sight, enhancing immersion in FPS and action-adventure titles. Figures 12 and 13 hint at potential compatibility with VR headsets and other un-specified accessories.

This patent, however, doesn't guarantee consumer availability. As with many exciting Sony patents, an official announcement regarding production and release remains pending.

The gaming industry's relentless pursuit of innovative hardware continues, from next-gen consoles to controller enhancements. Stay tuned for official updates from Sony on this and future patent developments.
