Set to launch on September 26, Marvel’s Spider-Man marks the second fully draftable, Standard-legal set in Magic's Universes Beyond line following the Final Fantasy set, and the third overall after 2023's Modern-legal Lord of the Rings set. While you won't find preconstructed Commander decks, **the cards in the Scene Box shown above** ***won't*** **be Standard-legal; they're tailored for Commander play instead.**
Following the initial Secret Lair featuring Wolverine, Captain America, and more, Spider-Man will be the first full set inspired by the Marvel comics. Wizards of the Coast Executive Producer Max McCall explains that a full set was necessary to do justice to the character and include the vast array of villains and moments from Spider-Man's universe. "Spider-Man needs a full set to truly capture the essence of the character and incorporate the many villains he’s encountered over the years," McCall states. "Including characters from the Spider-Man canon in a broader set would leave many key figures like Aunt May out."
McCall further elaborates on the design approach for Universes Beyond sets, noting that they "flip the worldbuilding on its head." Unlike typical Magic sets that must establish a setting and location while being engaging, Universes Beyond sets benefit from the audience's existing familiarity with characters like Spider-Man. "When we create cards that embody themes like great power and great responsibility, we can introduce more mechanical complexity because fans already grasp the narrative behind the card," McCall adds. "We don't need to simplify Universes Beyond cards; we just need to highlight recognizable moments that fans will easily connect with."
AnswerSee ResultsHead Designer Mark Rosewater shares insights on translating Spider-Man's world into the game, emphasizing the flexibility of Magic’s color pie. "Our color system is robust enough to depict heroism and villainy across all five colors," Rosewater says. He explains that Spider-Man aligns with white, blue, and green, with the Scene Box version featuring only white and blue. "Spider-Man’s sense of duty to use his powers for good is a hallmark of the white color pie. His origin from a scientific mishap, and his knack for invention, align him with blue. And his powers, linked to an animal and the destiny within the Spider-Man universe, fit well with green."
"We're not limiting ourselves to any one [comic] run or series."
In addition to the Scene Box, the set will include Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Bundles, and Prerelease Packs, all of which are showcased in the gallery above. While there won't be preconstructed Commander decks, the return of Welcome Decks offers a beginner-friendly entry point for new players to learn the game at local game stores.
Alongside this year's Final Fantasy set, Wizards of the Coast has also announced an upcoming set themed around Avatar: The Last Airbender. Additionally, two more in-universe sets are on the horizon: Tarkir: Dragontsorm and the space-themed Edge of Eternities.
