Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 Mod Adds 12-Player Co-Op, Raid Missions

Ever since the record-breaking release of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 last year, the modding community has been pushing the boundaries of what's possible within the game. The latest breakthrough from Tom, also known as Warhammer Workshop, who's behind the acclaimed Space Marine 2’s Astartes Overhaul, is nothing short of revolutionary. Tom announced the release of 12-player co-op this week, and the gameplay footage is nothing short of spectacular, showcasing players teaming up against a Tyranid Trygon Prime in what feels like an MMO boss fight.

Originally, Space Marine 2 only supported up to three-player co-op, but Tom and his team, with the backing of developer Saber Interactive, have shattered that limit. "Honestly, I’m just kind of in awe of Saber’s support for the modding community," Tom shared with IGN. "None of us expected 12-player PvE sessions to be possible this soon—but somehow, here we are. Thanks to their generosity and trust, this huge leap forward is finally here, and it completely changes what we can do."

While the current mod is still in its testing phase, it's already showing promising results, though it does disrupt the game's PvE balance due to the increased number of players. However, the modding community isn't stopping there. They're developing additional modes to leverage this new capacity, including prop hunt, PvP within operations, expansive updates to the upcoming horde mode, and exciting raid-style missions featuring formidable bosses and new mechanics that require strategic teamwork.

The Space Marine 2 modding scene has flourished, with a robust community of around 20,000 enthusiasts actively contributing on the main Discord server. "As both a modder and a player, it’s hard not to be excited," Tom expressed. "Huge credit as always to the Saber team for not just making all this possible, but continuing to drop amazing content of their own too, without any of the usual predatory battle-pass nonsense we take for granted in modern titles."

With the upcoming horde mode, a new class in development, and more Operations maps and weapons on the horizon, Space Marine 2 is set for an exciting future. Saber Interactive has also detailed Patch 8, shared some horde mode mechanics, and unveiled the setting for the new map. Moreover, Space Marine 3 is officially in the works, spurred by the success of its predecessor. The announcement hinted at "large-scale battles that are even more spectacular," which could suggest an increase in co-op player limits, similar to what the 12-player mod has achieved.
