Nintendo Switch 2 Game Cards: Some to Feature Download Keys Only

Author : Lucy May 14,2025

Nintendo has officially announced that the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 will introduce a new type of physical game card, known as game-key cards. These cards will not contain the actual game data but will instead provide a key for downloading the game. This revelation was made in a customer support post following the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, set to launch in June 2025. While traditional physical game purchases will continue, consumers should be aware of the differences with these new game-key cards.

The game-key cards are designed to be clearly labeled on the front of the packaging, ensuring that buyers are informed about the need to download the game after inserting the card into the console. This approach has sparked discussions among fans who value the instant playability of physical media, worried that these cards might eventually replace standard game cartridges.

For instance, early previews of Switch 2 box art for games like Street Fighter 6 and Bravely Default remaster include the game-key card disclaimer, whereas others such as Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza do not. It appears that game-key cards will be primarily used for larger games that benefit from this approach, such as Hogwarts Legacy or Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Notably, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition from CD Projekt Red will launch with a full 64 GB game card on the Switch 2's release day.

During the Switch 2 Direct, Nintendo emphasized the enhanced technology of its new red game cards, which offer faster data reading speeds compared to the original Switch. This suggests that not all game cards will be mere key holders, reinforcing the company's commitment to physical media. Nintendo has previously used game cards that required additional downloads, as seen with titles like LA Noire and NBA 2K18 on the original Switch.

As the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 approaches on June 5, 2025, more details will emerge about which games will utilize game-key cards. For comprehensive insights into today's Direct announcements, click here. To explore the new technological features of the Switch 2, click here.
