The Warhammer 40,000 community was rocked by the unexpected announcement of the development of Space Marine 3, just six months after the release of Space Marine 2. This news, coming from publisher Focus Entertainment and developer Saber Interactive in mid-March, sparked concerns among fans about the future support for Space Marine 2.

Addressing these concerns in a new blog post, both companies reassured fans that the development of Space Marine 3 does not signal the end of support for Space Marine 2. "Mid-March, we announced that Space Marine 3 had begun development and we’re excited to see your enthusiasm, although we hear those of you who fear for Space Marine 2 and its future support," the statement read. They emphasized that no development teams are being shifted from Space Marine 2 to the new project, and they remain committed to delivering more content for the existing game.

Space Marine 2's year one roadmap is still on track, with Patch 7 scheduled for release in mid-April. In the coming months, players can look forward to the introduction of a new class, new PvE operations, and new melee weapons. The developers teased, "Trust us, there are surprises even dataminers haven’t found out about :)" hinting at more exciting content to come.

The announcement of Space Marine 3 is viewed as the beginning of a long-term project, with the developers stating, "This announcement simply marks the genesis of a new project, years away from release. We’ve made a decision and have just started the process." They expressed gratitude for the community's support and excitement, which fuels their motivation to continue working on both projects.

A major highlight from the announcement is the upcoming new class for Space Marine 2. Speculation among fans suggests it could be the Apothecary, a role akin to a medic in Space Marine lore, or possibly the Librarian, which would introduce warp-powered space magic into the game. Additionally, fans are eager about the new melee weapon, with many hoping to see the iconic axe featured in Secret Level’s Warhammer 40,000 animated episode incorporated into the game, a desire so strong that modders have already begun working on it.

The decision to greenlight Space Marine 3 was influenced by the success of Space Marine 2. In an interview with IGN following the launch of Space Marine 2, Saber Interactive Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits mentioned the potential for story DLC and revealed that ideas for Space Marine 3 were already being discussed. He hinted at the possibility of exploring different factions and chapters, suggesting a rich future for the series. IGN has also reported on the likely enemy faction to be featured in Space Marine 3, adding to the anticipation surrounding the sequel.
