The AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D is currently the top gaming processor on the market, but AMD is rolling out a mid-generation update at CES 2026 with the Ryzen 7 9850X3D.
This new gaming processor is nearly identical to the existing 9800X3D, but features a significant out-of-the-box overclock, reaching a Max Turbo Boost of 5.6GHz for the 9850X3D versus 5.2GHz on the original. That’s roughly a 7% increase in clock speed, giving this chip a noticeable advantage over most other CPUs in gaming PCs.
Clock speed is essentially the only change, though. The AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D still delivers 8 cores and 16 threads, along with the same 104MB of 3D V-Cache and a consistent 120W TDP despite the higher frequencies. While the 9850X3D will outperform the 9800X3D, the gains aren’t large enough to justify an upgrade for those already using a 9th-generation Ryzen chip.
For users still on older hardware, this new processor offers a slight but meaningful edge in gaming performance. AMD hasn’t revealed pricing yet, so it’s unclear whether this chip delivers better value. Given how RAM prices continue to climb, don’t expect a bargain.
Fortunately, even as AMD phases out the 9800X3D, Team Red will keep selling the original model—so if the 9850X3D ends up much pricier, you might still find a good deal on the slightly slower version.
