Cities in inZOI may transform into ghost towns when numerous Zois perish with negative karma. Discover how inZOI's innovative karma mechanics work ahead of its early access launch.
inZOI Cities Can Become Overrun By Spirits
Population Growth Stalls When Ghost Population Rises

The accumulation of spirits can dramatically alter urban landscapes in inZOI, potentially affecting entire city ecosystems. PC Gamer Magazine recently featured insights from inZOI Director Hyungjun Kim about these impactful karma mechanics.
"Every action taken by a Zoi generates karma points," Kim explained. "When death occurs, accumulated karma determines the soul's fate. Deficient karma converts Zois into lingering spirits that must atone before rebirth."
Unchecked spectral accumulation creates serious consequences. Kim noted, "Excessive ghost numbers prevent new Zoi births and family formation, requiring players to actively manage citizen karma." This forces players to maintain balance to prevent urban devastation.
"Our system isn't strictly moralistic," Kim clarified. "Life encompasses complexities beyond binary good/bad judgments - all experiences hold meaning." He encouraged players to "explore karma's narrative potential while contemplating life's multifaceted nature."
Director Honors The Sims' Legacy While Carving New Path

While positioned as significant competition in the life simulation genre, Kim reframes inZOI's relationship with The Sims franchise.
"Rather than direct competition, we're offering genre fans alternative experiences," Kim stated. Paying respect to industry benchmarks, he acknowledged, "The Sims' profound legacy demonstrates remarkable achievement - capturing life's complexity poses formidable challenges."
The development team differentiates inZOI through distinctive features. Kim highlighted, "Our vision empowers players to craft desired lives through Unreal Engine 5's photorealistic visuals, extensive customization, and AI-driven creativity tools - encouraging limitless self-expression."
