The developers of Helldivers 2, Arrowhead, have recently addressed concerns that they might be shifting focus away from the game to work on their next project, known as "Game 6." As reported by VG247, CEO Shams Jorjani took to the official Helldivers Discord to reassure fans following the launch of the full-scale Illuminate invasion.
Jorjani expressed gratitude for the community's support, stating, "The wonderful thing is that thanks to the amazing support of you FINE people Arrowhead's future is quite bright and we have the freedom to explore some really cool concepts that we couldn't have otherwise. Game 6 (our next project) will happen the way it will happen thanks to you." This comment, however, sparked concern among some fans who feared it indicated a shift in focus away from Helldivers 2.
Jorjani quickly clarified, "Nah. It's ALL Helldivers 2 for now. A very, very small team will spin up something later this year and go at it sloowly. Helldivers is our main focus and will be for a loooong time." He further emphasized the longevity of Helldivers 2, stating, "As long as you folks keep playing and buying Super Credits we can keep it going," referring to the game's virtual currency used to purchase Premium Warbonds.
In response to a fan's request for Arrowhead's next game to be available in all regions, Jorjani revealed, "The next game is 100% funded by ourselves so we'll call 100% of those shots." This suggests that Arrowhead plans to self-fund their next project, potentially distancing themselves from Sony, and indicating that it won't be Helldivers 3.
Discussing the development process, Jorjani contrasted the upcoming Game 6 with the challenging eight-year development of Helldivers 2. He noted, "For the most part of the development cycle games plain suck. Very seldom are they truly fun from the get-go. And for Helldivers taking eight years to make it was rough for the longest time. But it came together in the end. The ONLY way to know is to playtest playtest playtest." He added that for their next game, Arrowhead aims to "nail a lot of the core s\*\*t early on (as you should) then make the rest."
These comments align with previous statements from Arrowhead developers who have expressed their desire for Helldivers 2 to have a long-lasting presence. Notably, Helldivers 2 is the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game ever, with 12 million copies sold in just 12 weeks. Despite challenges such as the PSN account requirement U-turn on Steam, review-bomb campaigns, and community feedback on game balance, Arrowhead remains committed.
Alex Bolle, production director on Helldivers 2, told IGN, "we want it to be around for years and years and years to come." He highlighted the team's motivation to stay true to the game's fantasy while continuously introducing new features and systems. Bolle also mentioned the excitement of adapting creative ideas from other games to fit Helldivers 2's unique style.
Recent leaks, including one from PlayStation, suggest that Super Earth may soon become a playable map as the Illuminate invasion reaches our home planet, promising more exciting content for Helldivers 2 players.
