"It's about providing players with constant opportunities to express themselves and explore their character's alignment," Patel explained to Game Developer. She emphasized the importance of mindful gameplay, encouraging players to reflect on their engagement: "When are you most engaged? When are you curious? When does your interest wane? What keeps you invested?"

The consequences of player choices are deeply intertwined with exploration of Eora's intricate world, particularly The Living Lands, where political power is fiercely contested. "The stories connecting these worlds are what I find most rewarding," Patel added.

Players assume the role of an Aedyran Empire envoy, tasked with investigating a spiritual plague while simultaneously pursuing their own political ambitions. "Meaningful roleplay comes from providing players with rich content to explore," Patel stated. "It's about defining who you want to be and how your actions reflect that identity."

Beyond the intricate RPG mechanics, Avowed features strategic combat incorporating magic, swords, and firearms. "The diverse abilities and weapon combinations ensure a unique experience with each playthrough," Patel noted.

In an interview with IGN, Patel confirmed the existence of numerous endings, each a unique blend of player choices. "We have a double-digit number of ending slides, and many different combinations are possible," she explained. "True to Obsidian's style, your ending is a direct reflection of your actions and discoveries throughout the game."
