Canada Also Affected by Nintendo Switch 2 Tariff Pre-Order Delay

Author : Mia May 21,2025

Gamers worldwide let out a collective groan last week when the Nintendo Switch 2 preorder date shifted from April 9 to an indefinite "who knows?" This change came in the wake of import tariffs introduced by President Trump, which sent financial markets into a tailspin. The ripple effects have crossed borders, with Nintendo Canada confirming that pre-orders in Canada are also postponed. So, if you were planning to pre-order through your cousin in Winnipeg, it's time to rethink your strategy.

"Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in Canada will not start on April 9, 2025, in order to align with the timing of pre-orders to be determined in the U.S.," stated Nintendo of Canada in a release to the Canadian tech site MobileSyrup.

"Nintendo will provide updated information at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025, remains unchanged."

This echoes the statement Nintendo of America gave to IGN on April 4, though the Canadian version omits any specific mention of the new tariffs.

"Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start on April 9, 2025, in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update the timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025, remains unchanged."

While tomorrow was set to be the original pre-order launch, there's still no word on when eager fans can start refreshing their browsers and verifying their credit card details. This uncertainty has left gamers in limbo, worried about potential price hikes from the initially announced $449.99.

In other countries, Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders went live in the UK today, with smaller retailers like EE, GAME, and Smyths selling out quickly. Scalpers have already taken to eBay, listing pre-orders for £500 ($639) or more, significantly above the retail price of £395.99 ($506).
