No 2024 film sparked as much debate as Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis. The audacious, unconventional epic became an instant conversation piece after its Cannes premiere last year, generating equal measures of admiration and bewilderment throughout the year. Now the visionary director is reimagining his controversial story in graphic novel form.
The adaptation will be published as Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis: An Original Graphic Novel by Abrams ComicArts this October, per The Hollywood Reporter. Chris Ryall - known for adapting works by Stephen King, Harlan Ellison, and Clive Barker - will write the novel, with artwork by Jacob Phillips (Newburn, That Texas Blood).
"I wanted the graphic novel to emerge from my film yet chart its own creative course," Coppola explained. "Rather than a direct translation, I envisioned it as a sibling work - something that could take flight through the talents of Chris Ryall, Jacob Phillips and the Abrams team. They've beautifully realized this vision, proving that art always finds new expressions beyond its original form."
The story follows an idealistic architect (Adam Driver) determined to build a futuristic utopia, who clashes with New Rome's pragmatic mayor (Giancarlo Esposito) in what amounts to a contemporary Roman fable about progress versus tradition.
While currently unavailable for streaming, the film can be rented or purchased through digital retailers.
